The lesion was excised entirely via a lateral pharyngotomy approach.
However, submandibular, suprahyoid pharyngotomy and transhyoid approaches have been used for schwannomas at the tongue base that are deemed difficult to approach transorally.
Over time, the tracheotomy has gone by several different names, among them pharyngotomy, laryngotomy, bronchotomy, tracheostomy, and tracheotomy.
