Minerals typical of the rocks of the epidote-amphibolite facies include biotite, almandite garnet, plagioclase, epidote, and amphibole.
These had a composition between almandite and pyrope, that is, they had both magnesium and iron with aluminum and silica.
Both are dark red, but while almandite tends toward a violet tone, pyrope shades toward yellow.
Pyrope, the magnesian variety of garnet, does not differ much in color from almandite.
Although each stone varies slightly, the mixture is roughly about 55 percent pyrope and 37 percent almandite, along with other elements.
Two varieties of garnet, almandite and pyrope, may exhibit the dark blood-red color especially ascribed to garnet.
