  1. (linguistics) A kind of syllabary in which a symbol or glyph representing an entire syllable contains parts representing a vowel and a consonant. Symbols for different syllables are typically generated by adding, altering, or removing the vowel portion of the symbol, often in the form of diacritics applied to a stable consonant symbol.

It is an abugida script that was originally developed to write the Ge'ez language.
The Sinhalese alphabet is an abugida used by the Sinhala people in Sri Lanka and elsewhere to write the Sinhala language and also the liturgical languages Pali and Sanskrit.
The standard is based on the dialect of the central Thai people, and it is written in the Thai alphabet, an abugida script that evolved from the Khmer alphabet.
The abugida nature of Bengali consonant graphemes is not consistent, however.
