The ARPANET was developed in the 1960s to meet Defense Department requirements, and became the first of a series of networks which evolved into the Internet.
This is one of the older ARPANET services.
Throughout the 1970's, universities with defense contracts joined ARPANET, to better communicate with the government departments to which they reported.
By December 1969, ARPANET contained four nodes, at Stanford, UCLA, the University of Utah, and the University of California, Santa Barbara.
While the ARPANET was barely sufficient, the rapid spread of the Internet in the early 1990s accelerated FOSS activity.
The original procedures from ARPANET could not handle this configuration.
